Dumpster blues

Positively Palermo received this: "An open letter to those who have moved in and moved out or bought big new TV sets: You have for sometime filled up the garbage bins on Sunburst and littered the area with huge cardboard boxes to the point that the garage is on the ground and the trash guys can't take it all. One person has just thrown down boxes and strafoam for their TV and now the wind has kicked up all over the place. Another person moving out has just thrown down a baby gate on the ground. Do you really have no concern for your neighbors or the environment?" Miss Penny Lane says: She's moved to tears when she hears such a thing.

I too fully support the current HOA board members and if/when the recall happens will vote for them. Hopefully all of you will do the same.

Live on Sandy, the trash situation just keeps getting worse.

Use your trash cans and recycling cans. Tiredof these lazy people who who rather toss junk on the ground by the dumpster than use the free service to put cans out in front of your house. Pure laziness and a disrespect to your neighbors.

Ahhh....people it's call a trash dumpster for a reason....you put trash, boxes, furniture or anything else in it or around it for pick-up. Get over it! I would rather they place it in the dumpster area than leave it on the street or in the front yard. Maybe the HOA needs to add more dumpsters!

Maybe the rental companies should pay for a dumpster since its tenant are filling them up. Their move-out this month, one example. The rental companies should make sure their tenant have trash cans and recycling ones too.

Anonymous said...

To 12:32, that's pretty sad logic - just throw your junk on the ground and that's better than using the FREE curb-side service. Now I've heard it all.

Anonymous said...

to 4:13 pm....using your logic then why do we have dumpsters? lets all throw our trash on the curb twice a week! Hmmmm.....more dumpster will solve the problem.

Anonymous said...

You know what... The Palermo community is paying for trash/recycle pickup from each home plus an additional fee for the dumpsters. In addition, if you have appliance/furniture you want to get rid of, you can call the Palm Springs refuse service and they will arrange to pick it up.

There is NO reason why anyone should be so anti-social as to dump furniture, large boxes, whatever and mess up our community - other than being utterly lazy and/or not giving a crap about the community.

Anonymous said...

@12:32 - jeez, you have got to be kidding - you think it's OK to toss sruff around the dumpster for someone else to pick up! Have you ever read the signs beside the dumpster.

Dumpster picku/emptying is a mechanical service by a truch witha driver. He comes by, and with the equipment on his truck picks up the dumpster and empties it into his truck.

You expect the driver to pick up furnite and other stuff you leave lying there??

There's a service for that - it's called phomne the Palm Springs service, they will come and take it away.

Anonymous said...

@4:21 - more dumpsters will not solve the problem if people keep dumping stuff around them. The point of a dumpster is to put stuff IN the dumpster.

Anonymous said...

I can't believe so many people could get so emotional about ....A DUMPSTER.....lol This site just cracks me up!

Anonymous said...

To 7:09, the comments show the concern we residents have for our Palermo, so if that "cracks" up out, that a shame on you. I do't know how an adult can be cracked up about people tossing garbage on the ground, causing a mess and not following basic common sense, but that's just how I was raised.

Anonymous said...

@7:09 - it's not the dumpster that's the issue - it's the way PEOPLE who think it's OK to toss furniture, boxes, garbage, etc., beside the dumpster - that is NOT OK.

Anonymous said...

To 9:50 am & 9:56 am....Who is throwing garbage on the ground?? The dumpsters are behind a screened wall and any furniture and garbage is out of sight waiting for pick-up by the trash service. Last time I checked... the trash service was being paid to PICK-UP our garbage...that's their job! The HOA needs to add more dumpsters...Two dumpsters cannot service 110 homes....

Anonymous said...

There has always been a problem with the dumpsters. PSDS will NOT pick up any trash that is not inside the dumpster so the inconsiderate people who leave trash next to the dumpster are the problem. This issue should be solved shortly as the dumpsters are being removed permanently and we will all be using curb side service.

Anonymous said...

I hope removing the dumpsters saves money $$$$

Anonymous said...

10:08 is right. Two small dumpsters is not enough for 110 homes. The usual cry of "blame the renters" is short sighted and just plain ignorant.

Anonymous said...

The dumpsters are being removed permanently? So what do I do with trash when I leave town on a Wednesday?

Anonymous said...

You deal with it just like if you were at a single family home or a place where no community dumpsters were provided ... Deal with it, do not whine.

Anonymous said...

The HOA pays for twice a week pick up service right at your doorstep. Use it, and stop complaining. Those of you who only use the dumpster are also irresponsible to the environment as there are no recycling cans there.

Anonymous said...

@12:11 removing the dumpsters does save money. Palermo how pays for the dumpster service AND for garbage / recycling pickup from every home. garbage twice a week, recycling once per week. That service also includes the ability to call up the Palm Springs garbage service to ask them to pick up large items such ad furniture.

Anonymous said...

To 803, excellent point.

Anonymous said...

Dump the dumpsters.

Anonymous said...

@June 29, 10:08 AM.

PSDS is paid to pick up trash and recycling from every home in Palermo PLUS they are paid to EMPTY the dumpsters every week. They are NOT paid to pick up trash/furniture, whatever that is dumped next to the dumpsters.

The Mon/thurs trash pick up do not take large items such as furniture. If you have large items you want to get rid of, you call PSDS and arrange for them to come pick them up (no charge).

@1:18...

The first proposal several months back to reduce what Palermo is paying for PSDS services was to get rid of the pickup from individual homes and go to an all dumpster system. That would require additional dumpsters for trash plus dumpsters for recycling.

This was investigated over the last couple of months are there were a number of major issues - including where to site the additional dumpsters.

At the June Board Meeting this was discussed and it was agreed to investigate further getting rid of the dumpsters completely.

As to your comment re "up in the air" I have to totally disagree. At the June board meeting there was discussion on the great progress the board has made with the investors looking to buy the rental units and undeveloped land (and the time several board members invested in this), work they are doing to get an easement issue resolved (something the original developer was supposed to have done but didn't, and has to be resolved before the sale can go through), the transition to Euclid, and work done on all the day to day stuff. This board is doing a great job and spending many hours making it happen for our mutual benefit.

Let me see: The board since January has found and hired a new management company. Check. Secured a killer deal with the bank and bidding company for the bank units/land that will mean the HOA will get title to the clubhouse and loans of cash. Check. Hired new service providers/contractors. Check. Is out there picking up trash, getting rid of the hornets. Check. Reached out to owners and renters. Check. In return, some have been personally attacked. When we were down in Palm Springs I asked one board member who would only say 'it comes wit the territory and we have thick skins so don't worry about it. Palermo's future is all that matters.' Class acts all the way around. What the board has done in five months and all the time put in is simply awesome.

I wish we had a place for green waste.

Anonymous said...

@5:42 - so let me see. It seems that, despite your sarcasm, you reluctantly agree that in the last few months the new HOA board actually has been doing a very good job. I'm so glad that you accept that. Perhaps we can now move on and support the current board in working for our community.

So, having raised what I thought was a reasonable question and having been accused of whining and complaining, let me point out a couple of things:

I don't live in a single family home, I live in Palermo, so that is a spurious argument June 29, 2012 7:46 PM. If there are to be no dumpsters, would you prefer that I left garbage on the kerbside for a couple of days? Or in the garage for a few weeks for the rats? Or throw it on the empty lot across the street? Or stuff it in the trash cans at the airport? I doubt the TSA would be sympathetic if I tried to take it with me.

And to June 29, 2012 7:50 PM, you are making unwarranted assumptions. It is not a question of the good guys using the kerbside pickup and the bad guys using the dumpsters.

Anonymous said...

How weird is it for someone to say if they don't have dumpsters then they would just leave their garage on the curb for days. Umm, there are rules against it for one, but how unneighborly to go there in that manner. Additionally, yes, it is wrong to throw your trash on the ground when the dumpster is overflowing, and it would not be overflowing it people used the curbside service which is free.

Anonymous said...

The homeowners that really want to keep the dumpsters should get together and pay for them. This would include the collection fee and the daily maintenance of cleaning up around the dumpsters. If you are wanting to do this, I urge you to email a board member quickly before the walls around the dumpsters are torn down. I'm sure the board would have no objection to someone else picking up this expense and daily responsibility.

Anonymous said...

If each home owner paid for their own trash pick-up and water consumption it would save the HOA a lot of money.....homeowner or renter everyone pays their fair share.

Anonymous said...

3:44 makes a good point. each unit should be in charge of it' own trash service.

Anonymous said...

Also, I think the problem on Sunburst has something to do with the one-bedrooms and those type of units don't have garage to store the trash cans so the people in them use the dumpsters more (right saying if this is righter wrong) I am just pointing out this fact. The dumpster on Melody does not seem to have this same problem as much and maybe it is just because a bigger portion of one units are closer to Sunburst (??). We as a community should be able to resolve this problem and the first step is education. Thanks for letting me speak.

I say get rid of the dumspters if it causing this much debate and this much problem.

Anonymous said...

Want to add my voice to the big chorus of owners and renters who say thank you to the board for the work.

Anonymous said...

I read that one of the hoa board members cleaned up the space and even hosed it down, and I would like to offer my appreciation.

Anonymous said...

I observed the same thing as 6:48 PM. Thanks Travis for your clean up of the trash area. I know you have done this many times in the past. I would also like to thank Harry Courtright and Larry (from Canada) for cleaning up the dumpster areas. I see daily property trash pick up from Tiffany, Rob and Harry so thanks to them too. It's nice to be in a community that looks after the grounds and also to have a board that works so hard at making things better her for the renters, investors and owners. If I missed anyone who goes above and beyond other than those above, thanks to you too.

Sandy's Point of View said...

Totally agree, I never saw any of the HOA board out here, lending a hand helping or caring like the new HOA. My hats off the everyone who lives here and cares about Palermo, I see renters who really care and take great pride, even though many Homeowners are constantly putting them down as less than they are. We all live and share this beautiful little community, and we all need to take pride in our surroundings, we have a board in place now that really cares as is evident in the things they do to make our community better.

A recall is a waste of money.

Anonymous said...

@jul 6 9:39

I agree. On the otherhand a small number of owners who for whatever reason didn't like the board we have were able to file the paperwork to require the recall. Presumably, the cost of the recall comes out of HOA dues so that we all get to pay for this.
On the other hand, if we all vote the current boartd back in, it is a reconfirmation of our support for them.

Quiet Side Sis said...

I will be voting for the current board, thank you very much. Very tired of reading all the bad-mouthing of them and this blog by some. And, for the record, I also like the advantages of the dumpsters. Such a service is especially convenient for those of us who do not yet live here year-round. The Palermo units are all relatively small, thus it's nice to be able to dispose of trash on a day that is NOT scheduled for pick-up, getting it out of your way in the condo. It's easy to say 'get rid of the dumpsters,' but in the end, I think they might be missed more that you know...just sayin' :)

Anonymous said...

The recall has become a joke; hardly none signed it and now they are backing away. They are now even trying to get the Bank involved because none is supporting the recall. What a big joke.

Anonymous said...

To 5:18 PM, I heard the entire board now supports the recall that was brought on by 1 board member. A yes vote on the recall may be the best thing to happen at Palermo. This time, we may be able to have the board members elected by the hoa. I'm voting yes for the recall and also voting to keep the majority of the current board.

Love it. Fab Four. I think they are doing good too. Luv our Fab 4. Getting the new management alone is worth my vote.
