Does the SunBus service Palermo?
Yes. Line 24. It seems strange, but to go downtown, you actually must take the bus north on Indian Canyon. Use the bus stop on the Palermo side of Indian Canyon just outside the complex. The bus travels up Indian Canyon a short way and then heads over to Palm Canyon and turns back toward downtown. SunBus calls this the westbound route of Line 24. NOTE: You must transfer with another bus — Line 111 — at Palm Canyon and Stevens to go all the way downtown (often the Line 111 bus is waiting there), or just walk downtown. FYI: Line 111 travels all the way down Highway 111 to Indio and back.

You also can catch Line 24 going the other way. The bus stop is on south side San Rafael near Indian Canyon. The bus going that way goes to the airport, City Hall and the shopping area of Tahquitz and Farrell. SunBus calls this the eastbound route of Line 24.

Fares are $1 for adults; 25 cents for a transfer. Go to www.sunline.org for more info.

What about Amtrak train service to L.A.?
The Amtrak station is just up Indian Canyon Drive from Palermo, near the 10. Call Amtrak at 800-872-7245 or www.amtrak. The Sunset Limited train has three weekly trips. It goes from L.A. through Palm Springs and then on to Yuma, Phoenix, Tucson, San Antonio and ending up in New Orleans. The westbound train to L.A. leaves the Palm Springs station at 5:02 a.m. Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and arrives in L.A. at 8:40 a.m. The eastbound train leaves L.A. at 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and arrives in Palm Springs at 5:15 p.m. Cost is $36 one-way. The train also stops in Ontario and Pomona. Note: Double check times with Amtrak because they do change. (Fun fact: The Sunset Limited is the oldest name train in the U.S. still operating. Sunset Magazine began in 1898 as a promotional magazine for the Southern Pacific designed to combat the negative Wild West stereotypes about California. Sunset Magazine was available onboard and at the stations.)

What about Metrolink trains?
The closest Metrolink stations are in Riverside and San Bernardino. You can get into L.A. and elsewhere on Metrolink. There's even an Inland Empire-Orange County line that goes to Irvine and the beach cities such as Oceanside, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano. Go to www.metrolinktrains.com for more information.
