Tree damaged at Sunburst & Quiet Side

The wind has taken its toll on a tree on Quiet Side near the intersection with Sunburst Blvd. Miss Penny Lane says: Let's all pray it can be saved with quick action by management.

UPDATE: The tree on Quiet Side, near the Sunburst and Sandy Point Trail intersection, now has been propped back up. Also, thanks to the person who corrected the kind of tree.

Indian Canyon closed - with strong gusts expected across the valley

Indian Canyon Drive again is closed today, with winds up to 60 mph expected across the entire valley. The morning paper reports:"A stretch of Indian Canyon Drive will stay closed for the weekend as high winds and cool temperatures sweep in for the holiday. Palm Springs police closed the road at the Whitewater Wash late Friday and planned to keep it closed through Tuesday because of high winds and blowing sand. The primary alternative routes, Gene Autry Trail and Vista Chino, remained open. Plan to hold on to your umbrellas during the picnics this holiday weekend, too: Wind gusts of up to 60 mph could blow through the Coachella Valley. A cool front will also sweep in, sending temperatures plummeting nearly 20 degrees below normal.'We're going to have a pretty strong storm that's going to come down California, and behind that front is a surge of chilly air,” AccuWeather.com meteorologist Brian Edwards said." Miss Penny Lane says: She likes the windy days in the valley because she can sit outside after washing her hair and the wind naturally dries it, rather than using a hair dryer.

SUNDAY UPDATE: Portions of Gene Autry Trail and Vista Chino are now closed as well. Winds of 43 mph were clocked at the airport.

The seven floor plans of Palermo Palm Springs: The one-bedroom E model

Palermo Palm Springs has seven floor plans. We have already posted six of them. Today we're posting the last remaining one, the one-bedroom E model. Palermo has five model plans with two bedrooms and two plans with one bedroom. Go to the archives on the left-hand column of this page to find the floor plans already added. Model A was posted on Sept. 16, 2010. Model B was Sept. 28, 2010. Model C was Nov. 22, 2010. Model D was Oct. 15, 2010. Model G was Sept. 19, 2010. Model F was April 1, 2011. Today, we are looking at the one-bedroom E model villas — the smallest of the condos. It is 831 square feet, or 105 square feet smaller that the one-bedroom F model villas. The E models feature one bedroom, office area, one bath, private front yard and carport. (Key differences between the E model and the bigger F model include: The E model has one bathroom rather than 1.5 baths, the rooms are smaller, the only bathroom is off the office area not connected to the bedroom. The F model has a walk-through closet that leads to full bathroom as well as a half bath off the office.) There are 16 Model E units at Palermo, on Sunburst Blvd., Quiet Side Street and Foothill Avenue. They are at: 3596 Sunburst (#189), 3606 Sunburst (#192), 3616 Sunburst (#193), 3626 Sunburst (#196), 3676 Sunburst (#205), 3686 Sunburst (#208), 3568 Quiet Side (#181), 3578 Quiet Side, (#183), 3597 Quiet Side (#191), 3607 Quiet Side (#194), 3617 Quiet Side (#195), 3627 Quiet Side (#198), 3677 Quiet Side (#207), 3687 Quiet Side (#210), 3528 Foothill (#182), and 3538 Foothill (#180. Miss Penny Lane says: The E must stand for easy to care for.

Large group of weekenders?

Positively Palermo received this e-mail: "Penny, I am a long-term renter in this community who loves it and cares for it. But I'm tired of the short-term rentals on my street, Sandy Point. Last night a pack of 15 or more! people were hanging out on the street and making noise. They look like a weekend party crowd packed into one place. Aren't there rules about this?" Miss Penny Lane says: Thank you for your care and love of Palermo.

Today is the day. Bids are due at 1 p.m. today for the foreclosed-upon 34 condos at Palermo Palm Springs once owned by Ron Shipka's Enterprise Cos. and the undeveloped Phase 2 land. See the Internet site of The Hoffman Company — here's is the link for the Hoffman Web site — for more information. There's also more on our April 30 posting. Repainting of rust color of the back-yard exteriors to begin May 23

Positively Palermo a few days ago received an email from an owner worried about the repainting of the rust color exterior paint. Crews have repainted the front exteriors but the back-yard exteriors weren't scheduled, and there's been no word from management. Sometimes procrastination pays off in not posting immediately, because now another owner has sent us an e-mail from management that outlines the schedule for the repainting of the rust color. The management e-mail states: "Dear Palermo Owners: The painting of the stucco in the backyards will begin on the dates noted below. You will receive a notice of when your individual unit will be painted.
5/23 Melody lane west side and sandy point north side,
5/30 Melody lane east side and penny lane west side,
6/6 Breeze north side and sandy point south side,
6/13 Penny lane west side and sunburst east side. Thank you."
Miss Penny Lane says: She's said it before, but she could use a touch-up herself.

Palermo resident offers idea to help 'stamp out hunger' on Saturday

Positively Palermo received this e-mail: "Morning Penny! Just an FYI - Postal Service will be hosting the stamp out hungar drive this Saturday - May 14th - super simple; Just load a grocery bag with non-perishable items (I know we all have stuff in our pantry that we can donate!) and leave bag at the mailboxes.... I know everyone is hurting, but I know our Palermo community is very generous too." Miss Penny Lane says: Her pantry does need a good cleaning so now is her chance.

Problems with Blogspot

Blogspot has been having big problems, including being shut down for part of Thursday. Our posting about bidders for the Enterprise properties being at Palermo Palm Springs and many comments from Thursday have disappeared. We're hoping they can solve it and restore it all. Miss Penny Lane says: Thanks for your patience.

Would-be bidders may be at Palermo Palm Springs today. Bids due May 20

You may be seeing some would-be developers at Palermo Palm Springs today. See our April 30 post for background. But basically today has been scheduled as a property tour from 10 a.m to 4 p.m., according to the Internet site of The Hoffman Company, real estate brokers. What's for sale is the foreclosed-upon 34 condos at Palermo once owned by Enterprise and the undeveloped Phase 2 land and the six vacant models on that land. Bids are due 1 p.m. Friday, May 20. Miss Penny Lane says: She wishes she had thought to call in sick today and have a pitcher of Cosmos on hand for bidders as they walk by. Cheers to our bright future together.

Gym equipment broken - but how?

Positively Palermo received this e-mail: "Penny, please have someone fix the broken equipment in the clubhouse gym. The two elliptical machines aren't working because their electrical plug-ins are broken. The third prong in each electrical plug-in of the machines is busted off and the busted-off prong is stuck into the electrical socket in the floor. It almost look like someone did it on purpose. This is the second time this has happened. How did this happen?" Miss Penny Lane says: The only exercise she gets these days is exercising her patience at work.

Problems with gate clickers, anyone?

Positively Palermo received this e-mail question: "Penny: Do you know if anyone else has been having issues with the clickers and the gate?" Miss Penny Lane says: She's been stuck behind more than a few motorists clicking their clickers with no results as she eagerly awaits to get inside the comforting walls of Palermo Palm Springs. Now she feels bad for the choice words that came to mind about them if there's been a mechanical problem all along.

Indian Canyon still shut. It's been closed in 2011 for more days than in the two previous years combined

Today's Desert Sun has a story about Indian Canyon Drive being closed this year for so many days. The story says:"High winds and flooding have closed Indian Canyon Drive at Whitewater Wash nearly as many days so far in 2011 as in the two previous years combined. The road, which cuts through a riverbed and connects downtown Palm Springs with Interstate 10, has been closed for 12 days since the beginning of the year, including Monday. Between December 2008 and December 2010, the road was closed for 13 days, according to David Barakian, public works director for Palm Springs. The closures have not only inconvenienced drivers but have cost the city thousands of dollars for cleanup crews and occasionally forced the police department to post officers to keep drivers from trying to get around barricades. If the sand is especially deep, it can cost as much as $10,000 to clear. It cost $24,000 to clear the debris after the flooding in December. Numerous “fixes” have been suggested by Desert Sun readers, including building a wall or planting tamarisk trees to block the blowing sand and floodwaters. If only it was that easy, the problem would have been solved long ago. The natural terrain and sensitive desert ecology limit the options available to highway engineers. Shifting sand is important to several different wildlife species, including the fringe-toed lizard. Whitewater Wash is protected under the Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan. And you can't build a wall or plant a bunch of trees across the riverbed because waters need to flow unimpeded. A bridge has long been proposed for that area, but with an estimated price tag of $200 million." Miss Penny Lane says: She no longer cares if Indian Canyon Drive is closed because she's found out that there's another Dairy Queen to the south.

Indian Canyon Drive closed due to wind

Miss Penny Lane says: She enjoys the wide open space of the undeveloped land when she drives through it on her way out into the world.

College of the Desert to show off West Campus signage tomorrow

The College of the Desert's plans for a big campus are continuing. There's the unveiling of the campus logo tomorrow. Here is the announcement from the college: "College of the Desert will unveil the signage of the new West Valley Campus, on the northwest corner of Tramview Road and North Indian Canyon Drive. It will take place on Wednesday, May 4 at 11:30 a.m. The unveiling will be attended by COD officials and VIP’s along with local dignitaries. The event and parking will be held at the James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center, 480 Tramview Road, Palm Springs. Besides educational programs, the West Valley Campus will feature commercially-operated facilities for research development, business incubation of clean technologies and a 60-acre 'GreenPark' site where energy will be generated by a Southern California Edison through photovoltaic solar systems. 'GreenPark' could have the potential to generate energy for 5,200 homes and provide a revenue stream for COD. The campus will create its own energy and be a showcase for 'Green Technology' in terms of infrastructure and job training programs as the goal of a joint initiative with the cities of Palm Springs, Cathedral City and Desert Hot Springs. The uniquely self-contained and sustainable campus will be integrated with existing facilities on a site at the northwest corner of Indian Canyon Drive and Tramview Road in Palm Springs and will serve the entire western valley. The James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center already occupies a portion of the site. The first phase of the campus would cost about $40 million and be operational by the 2014/15 academic year, according to current estimates. The proposed West Valley Campus will be designed and constructed in accordance with COD’s recently-adopted Policy on Sustainability Stewardship and move beyond simply living within available resources to a strategy of designing a holistic operating campus that is compatible with, and learns from, our desert ecology. College officials recently announced the selection of the design team for the 119-acre campus. The new campus is being developed with proceeds from bond sales authorized when voters approved Measure B by a huge margin in 2004. Measure B is a $346.5 million bond issue that included a mandate to acquire sites and construct satellite campuses to serve the west and east portions of the Coachella Valley." Miss Penny Lane says: Welcome, new neighbor.

More on the colors of Palermo Palm Springs

Positively Palermo received an e-mail from an owner saying that management has sent out an email about the paint colors of Palermo Palm Springs and their availability at Lowes. The e-mail from the owner to us reads: "FYI. You can get our paint at Lowes. Does this mean we have to do our own painting?" Below is a rendering of the buildings and paint info that management sent out in its email. It seems hard to read. But the management email says more information on the colors apparently is available on the DRM Web site. (You also can go to the Oct. 18, 2010 posting in the Positively Palermo archives where we posted information about that paint colors, the same artist rendering and other information about the paint.). Miss Penny Lane says: She loves the colors of Palermo so much that she sometimes dresses in them.
