Chirp in with advice about the need for a pest control company

Positively Palermo has been asked to post this: "Hi Miss Penny Lane: Can you put this question out to owners: Is there a need to have a pest control company? Who do you recommend? I'm not a desert native so I don't know what must be doing vs. what is not necessary. Thanks. We had a great vacation at Palermo over the holidays, but are sadly back in the frozen tundra once again ..." Please help with advice or tips if you have them. Miss Penny Lane says: The chirps of the crickets in summer often lull her to sleep. She has even named one or two that have managed to sneak into her home. They proved to be more reliable companions than any of her recent beaus.

I don't use one. But would be interested if there are "green" alternatives out there. Spraying all that junk isn't good for us or all the dogs at Palermo.

It might sound gross, but we just use glue-type squares near the sides of the garage doors during the season the bugs (crickets and spiders) are out in force.

i had a really bad ant problem in my bathroom after that last rain...they were coming from the cracks and unsealed areas around the baseboards.

One trick some told me about the insects in the garage is to buy pieces of felt from Lowes or Home Depot. You then attack the felt to the area by the garage door (the bottom on the side where there are small openings), so the felt blocks the access a bit. It isn't fool-proof, but does help. Does anyone else have ideas how to block those small gaps - that is where the crickets and spiders come in.

Also, I've only seen one neighbor use a pest service, so I don't think it is needed unless you have a particular problem. The crickets and spiders seem seasonal.

To answer the question about the gaps between the garage door and the wall, we uses fine steel wool. It also keeps the bigger critters out, and they can't chew through it.

Fine wool steel? Where do you get that and how do you attached it? No one one my street uses a pest service that I know of. Does the HOA spray ever?

I try to use a natural spray, made of vinegar, lemon, etc. You can get the recipes on the Internet. This is what our grandmothers used but all these chemicals. Please also remember spraying pesticides is hard on all the dogs at Palermo. It is tough on their little bodies.

A man in a golf cart last week was spraying a lot of liquid bug killer on the front of all the buildings. Brandi Scott at DRM should have notified residents of this application for health reasons.
