Is everyone OK? News reports now say the quake was a magnitude 5.4 (originally they said it was a 5.9). It was centered in Borrego Springs, about 28 miles from Palm Springs. The buildings were shaking here at Palermo. So far, there have been numerous aftershocks. Everyone, meet near the clubhouse if it gets worse. Report any damage found here on Positively Palermo — and to the official Palermo management too, of course. Go to http://earthquake.usgs.gov/ for more information. Miss Penny Lane says: Once again, this is a reminder that Palermo needs an emergency plan and a safety committee.

I am so glad we have this site to talk to each other. Really fills a void that management has ignored. They even cut out the newsletter. But now this is a go-to site. We are fortunate that someone took the time and effort to establish this community blog. If there is a big quake and we have electricity, I know where to go and how to get the message out.
I have an earthquake (disaster) kit at the house and an emergency plan (run like hell!)...I recommend going to www.redcross.org to get info. about stuff - it was really a big help - and if we have a committee here at Palermo as a "go to" team with cell phone numbers, etc...that would help too. I live here year round and would be happy to be a part of that. I always call my next door neighbors, who are only here a few times a year, if a blackout, or something like this occurs. Safety committee of residents is a good idea (and needed).
I agree. I think a safety committee is a great idea and would love to be apart of that and need to start that now rather than later. The sooner the better. I actually have a local resource for purchasing your Emergency/Earthquake Kits. BDB Enterprises offers Faultline Kits and I will put some of their postcards in the Clubhouse and then you take that card to their Store located on Perez Rd in Cathedral City. They also have literature and can provide classes for Palermo on safety, Fire, Earthquake etc. either in the clubhouse or at the store in Cathedral City. Blair Brady is the owner and he is also FEMA Certified and would be happy to set up something BE PREPARED! is his motto. It isn't just for the Boy Scouts anymore!
I will look for the cards. I first want to get my own house in order kits, water and so on), then maybe get involved in the wider community. Thank you Lobo for the info. We also just can't rely on Penny because if the power goes out we can't get to this site.
Does anyone know if the gas lines shut off in a major earthquake? I know that on many new builds the gas lines have a Jiggle switch. I made the word jiggle up ..but whatever.. I don't know where to shut off the gas.
True Value has a piece of hardware to shut off the gas.
I'm not sure if this is normally a recommendation for earthquake kits, but it can be a good idea to have a stash of one dollar bills. This was a lesson learned after the Loma Prieta earthquake. The reason is, although stores may reopen, the electricity is often off, so the cash registers don't work. A lot of store owners were unable (or unwilling) to make change so small bills were extremely helpful.
Wow. That's a great suggestion. I have some 20s in case the ATM goes out when the electricity is cut off but never thought about smaller ones. THANK YOU. I also have a bit of money in the car. If you think about it, there a good chance you won't be at home when the Big One hits.
