To heat or not to heat?

Positively Palermo has received a resident report saying management has decided to no longer heat the back little swimming pool because of the cost of the gas. The decision was made at Wednesday evening's HOA board meeting. The spa back in that area still would be heated. The resident also reports that the board is looking into putting a lock on the heater on the front big swimming pool because people are turning the heat way up and the gas bill is high. It's said that high utility costs are one reason the HOA monthly fees were increased to $268 starting this month. If anyone has more details about the pool situation as it was not on the board agenda, please share them. Miss Penny Lane says: She's a big pool kind of lady, and you might just catch a glimpse of her there this weekend staring up at the mountains as she splashes around.

I was at the board meeting and it was not on the agenda but was brought up in open forum by a homeowner. The pool should have already been turned off by quorum vote of the HOA Board. It was apparently recently turned on in error and will be turned off again and the control has been locked (as it should be). The main pool will still be heated and a mechanism is being sought to lock that control. I for one swim in that pool and can tell you it is too warm many times for the middle of January. We spend as an HOA way too much heating the Main pool due to careless people serving their own needs by turning the dial up. The increase in dues was not due to one singular line item like utilities, but that certainly plays a part.

Hope this clears it up.

A neighbor told me that Brandi said at the meeting that she had the pool heater turned off and said that we already were seeing savings, but then some board member said he had the pool guy turn it on and Brandi I guess didn't know that, and then the board voted to turn it off - all sounds Kafka-like doesn't it. All this aside though I feel that it is the right decision because of the cost and how that pool is hardly ever used, partly because it gets shade in the afternoon in the winter. People should be notified too. My thoughts about the main pool is that it needs a lock on the heater but it also needs a locked gate to give an measure of security for the equipment and against people turning it up. That is fool-proof but does provide a bit more security for the equipment. Have a great day everyone!

Does anyone know what temp. the mail pool will be set at after the heater is locked up?

The pool temp controls have not been under lock and key. This is an on going issue. Please see the email I sent to Brandi two months ago. She never bothered to respond. The cost of heating the pools is an easy "WAG THE DOG" issue. GEE, I think there are bigger issues at hand. I doubt the pool is the big ticket item. But that's all they can come up with to save money??? Please people look at the annual budget more closely. If the temperatures were controlled, it would not cost that much. The lack of control of the thermometers is what has cost money!
Here's the email I sent:

"The pool temperatures are erratic, either extremely hot or freezing. Apparently the temperature controls are not secured. I am sure none of us want to waste money on heating & electric bills but people are randomly cranking the heat up or turning it way down and that is wasting money. It is impossible to enjoy a swim. Why aren't the temperature controls under lock and key? Many of the residents and vacationers like to swim in the pools especially during the season. Heated pools were promised to owners and renters. Both pools should be heated during the winter months.

Please look into to this. I know we are trying to save money and we could if the temperature controls were locked. The temperature and lighting controls should be on a timer. I believe the topic came up at a meeting in connection with the recent increase of dues. It seems like a fairly easy solution if the controls were monitored and secured. Only the pool maintenance people should have access."

Brandi never responded. We have paid our HOA dues for years and we see no active leadership with DRM. People have suugested "Email Brandi" I have and still there is not support.

We want to be able to swim in the pool...no dog park, no tennis court...so many things promised. At least let us enjoy a swim and a dip in the spa.

Please SAVE THE POOLS!

I'd like to know exactly how much it costs to heat the baby pool and at different temps because maybe it could be heated at a reasonable but still low temp. If it is true that Brandi said we are seeing savings and the pool was still being heated back there then maybe the putting of the lock on the gate to the pool heater did help (the lock at that gate in the past was just sitting there but not lock I understand). I too agree that item should have been on the agenda and that is why this site is important to who live away. No call-in number was given to us to participate and I do feel that community manager should respond to all and every email/call/whatever from owners. It can't be that many emails when you think a bunch of units are managed by a rental company and those tenants go through that company with complaints.

it is just vacation people using the little pool

More notice would have been nice because we have people coming and told them there would be two heated pools to use.

That back pool has not been heated in ages....and when it has it was spotty.......if you ever swim there you would know it is not truly considered a heated pool.......I would not advertise it as such if you have tenants or guests staying at your place. Just saying.......

if yo go online to the various vacation rental websites you will find at least 6 or 7 units being rented out, some nightly and mostly at least weekly, all in violation of the CCandR's, so people want the hoa to keep the pools hot all the time for people renting out their places in violation? I live near one on Sandy Point and every week we are getting new people in. I moved in here with the understanding from my (long-term) rental property management company that this was not allowed. The hoa must take care of this.

If you are concerned, please know that every vacation rental advertisement is required by PS city law to post their permit number in their ad. The city is being aggressive to ensure compliance. Every unit must post the permit info and condo rules inside the unit along with condo rules. If there are new owners or renters breaking rules, please bring it to their attention. We are a community and we should feel comfortable talking to each other rather than pointing blame.

Many ads on the Internet don't have the permit number. I'm living on Sandy Point by someone who has need weekly or weekend renters constantly. What is the HOA going to do about this?

Why do you think the HOA should solve all your problems? Have you ever considered talking to your neighbor? If you see someone partying with glass at the pool, speak up! A community is built by the people. We all have a say. You are the eyes and ears of the community. Do something productive rather than expecting the HOA to solve everything.
