Here's the update on the public art discussed in last week's post. The artist left this post on this site: "I was really looking forward to making these pieces (I am the artist that was supposed to be commissioned to make them). The style and finish of them was to be similar to the animal sculptures I made for the Denver Zoo:

One concern is what happened to any money for public art that the developer may have paid into the city's public art fund and did it go elsewhere for different art. Another question is how can Palermo residents get the city to install the promised artwork. Miss Penny Lane says: Bring it on!

And we want headless/neckless giraffes with sticks and trees coming out their necks and a**es on Indian Canyon because...? (these are just exact replicas of the giraffes the artist did for Denver sans heads and tails. We would do this so the crackheads on their way to Desert Hot Springs waiting at the bus stop can deface them? Because they represent how we had our heads up our a**es when we bought here? Because the developer had his head up his a** when he suggested it? Symbolic of the time it was suggested. Do we really care?
The bus doesn't go to DHS from our stop. The bus from here goes downtown. I take it. I'm glad it's there. I wish more people rode the bus.
952 sounds like someone who bought at the high and doesn't like where the market went. We love it at Palermo, so glad we bought our second home away from home. Wonderful neighbors.
The art is neat too.
I do wish the bus service was better. You can take the bus toward downtown (but not all the way without a transfer) or you can go the other way toward the airport. With the College of the Desert coming, there is supposed to be a transit hub there! Can't wait. Palermo is the place to be in PS looking ahead. Great investment too right now. Sorry for those who bought pre-sold pre-construction but ...

The art is interesting, but more indicative of the excesses of a real estate bubble. I think if another developer comes in nothing like that will be built.
All developers in Palm Springs must put up public art or give money to the city public art fund - been that way for decades, so question: What happened here? Cuz either way someone is on the hook for the money or the art.
The architecture at Palermo is enough art for me.
As the artist, I appreciate all the positive comments. ;) As for the comment about these being "exact replicas of the giraffes the artist did for Denver sans heads and tails" ... well, I understand that a quick glance might lead one to think that, but these designs were very much created from scratch just for this project. If you look at the animals for the zoo and these, you'll see the only similarities are the generally contemporary style and coloration, they have four legs and hooves... and... well, that's about it. :) The goal with these was to intentionally create a little bit of controversy, making Palermo a point of reference for the community. Icons of a place are often slightly controversial, and although my sculptures are not anywhere near as impressive as something like the Eiffel tower, if one reads up on the history of it, they will learn that even that icon (that nobody can imagine Paris without) was loved by some, but hated by many others at first, even though it was originally meant to only be temporary. If you just create something boring that blends in, nobody cares one way or the other about it. To be interesting, you are going to generate at least a few complainers, so I'm ok with that. :) As for defacing them, part of the reason I use stainless steel is so that they are *very* easy to clean with a little thinner if anyone does try to harm them with paint. That's why stainless steel is so popular in the kitchen, it's about as damage resistant of a material as you'll find. But thanks for the concern. :)

Love his art. I wrote to him over a year ago to see what the status was on his sculpture here at Palermo. He has a wonderful web site check it out.He's also HOT !
