Large group of weekenders?

Positively Palermo received this e-mail: "Penny, I am a long-term renter in this community who loves it and cares for it. But I'm tired of the short-term rentals on my street, Sandy Point. Last night a pack of 15 or more! people were hanging out on the street and making noise. They look like a weekend party crowd packed into one place. Aren't there rules about this?" Miss Penny Lane says: Thank you for your care and love of Palermo.

They were a PAIN!!!!

They are staying at the same unit on Sandy Point that was mentioned here before advertising on Craigslist during the Coachella music fest as a place that "sleeps 10" with extra mattresses.

Based on overflow parking over on Quiet Side I think there are quite a few of them! I cannot locate the "rules" but I believe we are not allowed to use smoker grills, charcoal, or wood-burning firepits either. I wish we could as I miss my fire bowl but they have had a smoker going since early this morning. I am not sure they are short-term renters though. I recognize a couple of them from before so either the owners are using there unit or they are frequent short-term renters.

Whoever they are - weekend renters or party friends - they have packed the place. They move to the back pool and were absurdly loud- left trash behind, chairs all over the place and the spa running. I kind of hope they are weekend renters because I hope an owner wouldn't do this to us.

I should have just called the police last night because of the noise by my place.

I spoke to one and she said she a friend rented it.

Those of us on Sandy Point (not Shady) are pretty tight. We know there are two problem rentals of the short term variety, one on each side of the street. The one on the exterior side seems to have a lot of out of state license plates coming and going.

The big party event was at the one on Melody Lane on the interior side.

At the start of the next season, we all need to be more active on this issue. There are six or seven offenders. They need to be turned into the city so they get permits and paid hotel bed taxes. It's a misdeamenor if you don't pay the tax and don't obey the city rules (24 hour contact number, neighbor notification). It's easy to figure out from the Internet ads which units these are. I'm sure the city would love all these taxes.

Great! Palm Springs will have more tax dollars for the city council to waste. How is that going to keep the parties away?

Why don't we just be more proactive about the parties? When someone is having them, call the police. That should quiet things down fast, especially if anyone is under 21.

What weird "logic" above - cheat our city out of taxes and break the law because the city is "wasting" tax money anyway - it's the kind of thinking that the big banks and people who work at banks engaged and got us in this mess.

Anonymous said...

The notion that Big Banks and Wall Street caused "this mess" is very naive. The U.S. lost it's manufacturing base over the last few decades to emerging markets. Instead of competing head on we chose the easy path of entitlement and tried to preserve our standard of living by going into debt. Of course Wall Street played a part, by selling the only thing the U.S. was exporting anymore: debt. Naturally the house of cards fell down. The banks, the government, homebuyers, all of us are responsible though. To say that a few moustache twirling execs at some big banks caused the economic mess is just plain ignorant.
Aren't you glad so much of your tax dollars went to these people's bonuses though? That's not wasting, is it?

Bank of America (before and after Countrywide) was something else wasn't it. How do people work for such places and do this? As a country we need to begin following the rules and not harm others, like those owners doing weekly/weekend rentals are harming the quality of life of residents at Palermo. Such a bank mentality - anything goes.

LOL I love how somebody can buy a house worth $150K for $400K thinking they will make money and then and walk away and dump it on the bank (or the taxpayer) when prices collapse, while blaming the bank or an investor for being greedy. People need to stop treating home loans as a call option on the price of real estate. Yes anything goes, as long as you have no skin in the game.

Agree with 1:37 in that you do have to wonder where places like IndyMac, Bank of America and so forth got their employees. I wonder how today any self-respecting person could work for them after the trouble they helped cause.

And to 10:07, the mentality is amazing. They solicit people to take out these loans and then these people break the rules with illegal short rentals.

Anonymous said...

Yeah they held guns to people's heads and forced them to buy overpriced real estate. If you were "solicited" to buy a penny stock, would you do it? I can't tell you how many friends tried to convince me from 2002-2006 that I needed to jump into the real estate market. Banks are not without sin, but everybody was drinking the punch. Now the banks, investors and taxpayers are left holding the bag while people who are upside down bail on their failed investments, after living in them rent free for as many as 3 years.
Another major factor was the ill-advised government policy of making everyone a homeowner, combined with artificially low rates. The outcome was pretty predictable (to anyone who wasn't buying real estate at the time).

Sounds like someone is bitter for buying at the top of the market. If blaming your evil lender allows you to sleep at night when you skip out on your debt, good for you. But most people will still see someone who made a foolish decision and who doesn't have the integrity to own up to it.

About the short term rental, there seems one this week on my Sandy Point - the place that had a parade of short terms in the winter (middle of the block on the side of the street that border the Avalon). Now one is back and making noise. I've sent Penny pictures of all the cars that have paraded through but they have yet to be posted here.

About the other strain of topic going on here, it is amazing what Bank of America and such did to make a buck = and I see how you are talking about the same mentality type with the people breaking government and Hoa rules on weekenders to make a buck. Well, good night Palermo, luv ya.

Guys, about the pair of illegal rentals on SPT, there's a Nevada plated-car in one of the driveways, can we call the city or what?

Anonymous said...

There are a couple places on Sandy Point that have cars illegally parked in the driveways seemingly permanently. I think we should call Brandi about this. Cars are only supposed to be parked in the driveways for periods of 2 weeks or less. There is a brown car that is always parked in the driveway on Sandy Point.

Banks and Borrowers both made foolish decisions and both deserve to lose money on said decisions. Buyers can dump the property though and banks get bailouts from the Government through TARP and Fannie/Freddie, so unfortunately it is the taxpayer that is left to pay the bills.

The rental near the middle on Sandy Point has a long term tenant there now, I met her yesterday. She doesn't seem like the kind of person to make a lot of noise though, so maybe we are talking about different units.

Gotta love Sandy Point Trail. Never a dull moment on that street.

Anonymous said...

Yes, call the city and tell them there is a car with a NV License plate in the driveway on Sandy Point. Send them pictures if necessary. Please report on what they say. We can use a laugh on here!

Out of state plates do suggest a short term rental but that doesn't worry me as much all the old BMWs with out of date registrations. I think that is the brown one in the driveway on Sandy that the past poster was talking about. They have these clunkers without tags.

Anonymous said...

Someone should notify Brandi about this vehicle. Has anyone seen it move in the last few months?

Anonymous said...

They have a half dozen old BMWs without the right tags

I don't think this neighborhood is zoned for a "pick a part" business. Someone should notify the city about this
